Back to Independence (BTI) Fitness

STRENGTH. MOBILITY. FUNCTION. LIFE.

We focus on promoting neuroplasticity to help those with neurological conditions reach their functional goals and improve their everyday lives. Our program is designed to complement traditional hospital/clinic-based therapy by stimulating new and existing neurological connections, enhancing recovery, and improving overall health and wellness.

Our goal is to help bridge the gap between therapy and fitness by providing rehab equipment, therapist guided supervision and an accessible gym to the community. We strive to build a welcoming environment and empowering atmosphere to help those with neurological impairments push through their limitations and rise above paralysis!

Our community members who exercise with us are made up of those who have experience neurological impairments, symptoms, and/or paralysis due to injury or disease such as Spinal Cord Injury, Amyotrophic Laterals Sclerosis(ALS), Brain Injury, Cerebral Vascular Accident(CVA) / Stroke, Guillain–Barré Syndrome(GBS), Multiple Sclerosis(MS), Transverse Myelitis, Parkinson's Disease, Cerebral Palsy, and Neuromuscular Disorders,

We offer Activity Based Therapy; a specialized post-acute neuro fitness training and aquatic exercise sessions with our Neuro Fitness Specialist to continue improvement after, between, or in conjunction with occupational and physical therapy.

Why Activity Based Therapy(ABT)?

In traditional therapy programs, the focus is on working with the muscles that are already strong enough for current function, adaptation, and compensatory techniques. BTI rehab fitness's focus is to strengthen areas below and around the injury to challenge and reorganize new neurological connections for recovery optimization and independence. Our goal is to provide patterned motor activity, gravitational loading, target task specific and functional training, challenge the non-innervated muscles , improve core stability and endurance for overall health and lifelong wellness.
  • Equipment

Our facility is stocked beyond weights and resistance bands with Total gyms, tilt tables, standing frames, mat tables, SCIFIT arm ergometer, NuStep, Smith machine, parallel bars, Rifton gait trainer, hoyer lift, electric stimulation, Myolyn FES(functional electric stimulation) bike, treadmill, and more!  We have a body weight support harness system that allows us to unweight our clients for a variety of training options such as over the treadmill, elliptical, versa climber, parallel bars and overground.

Our equipment may fill the gym, but our best assets are the hands on Neuro Fitness Specialists with dynamic therapeutic hands on approach and facilitation for recovery.

    -B.R.

"I have been going to Back to Independence for a few months after being discharged from outpatient rehab therapy at Carolina Medical Center. I had a brain hemorrhage stroke. I needed therapy to continue to help me make further recovery progress. The therapists at BTI have been wonderful and know what I need to do to continue in my recovery. I enjoy all of the therapists and feel that they have become friends as well as teachers. I highly recommend BTI."

    -G.B.

"BTI Rehab provides aquatic therapy to my daughter. The therapy has been so helpful to her and she enjoys it too! Each session includes water walking, stretching, kicking, floating, balance, and core exercises. The therapists and trainers are great with special needs clients. They also helped us get grant funding to support the therapy. Thank you BTI Rehab!!!"
